COAA Sichuan Earthquake Relief

Dear Friends,

Thanks for your generosity! Since COAA started the Sichuan Earthquake Relief Campaign, we have received tremendous responses.  At this time of writing, we have received $14,979 from 179 donors.  These donations come from 23 professional institutions of 15 States. We are moved by the pledge of Drs. Kuan-Man Xu, Bruce Wielicki, and Takmeng Wong of NASA Langley Center, who commit donating the monetary part of their NASA Henry Reid Award, which will be announced in July, for our effort.  We are touched by the efforts of Drs. Tingjun Zhang, Xinzhao Chu, and De-Zheng Sun at NSIDC and CIRES/NOAA in Boulder for raising $3,120.  The NOAA Science Center has also collected $4,270 so far.

We are confident the total amount will top $16,000 when this campaign is wrapped up.  We believe this is a substantial amount, which will bring some comforts to the families of victims and our suffered colleagues in the Meteorological Bureau of Sichuan Province (MBSP).  Our Paypal account will remain open to accept donation till the end of July.

To deliver the donation to our targeted earthquake relief effort, we’ve decided to send the fund through the Chinese Meteorological Society (CMS) Sichuan Chapter.  CMS is the Sister Organization of COAA.  The benefactors include families of earthquake victims in MBSP and our colleagues in the Beichuan Meteorological Station, where the earthquake hit the hardest for helping their relief efforts.  We are discussing the technical details with MBSP to finalize this channel.  This decision is a result from the great efforts of Dr. Tingjun Zhang of NSIDC, who discussed with the Administrators of MBSP, and Prof. Da-lin Zhang of UMD, who contacted the Chinese Meteorological Administration (CMA).

We have also received the gratitude from Dr. Guoguang Zheng, the Administrator of CMA, who expressed the sincere appreciations to COAA and the oversea friends for their concerns and donations.

Again, we thanks for all of your contribution. All the donations without any overhead will be fully used for the earthquake relief of MBSP.  A final report will be provided by MBSP to show how the donation is spent.  Donors’ name list and affiliation have been posted on the COAA S Californian Chapter (SCC) Website. http://groups.google.com/group/coaascc.  Please check the name list to be sure your donation has been received.  We are keeping the process transparent; anyone can send email to guyu_h@yahoo.com and yxue@geog.ucla.edu requesting audit information.  The donation record will be reviewed by the COAA SCC Executive Committee and the copy of all checks and the Paypal record will be reported to the COAA Board of Directories.

Every donor will receive a receipt from the COAA SCC along with an acknowledge certificate from MBSP in July.

Should you have any suggestions, please feel free to let us know.

COAA's CFC Number is: 60027

Dear Friends,

I am writing to you seeking your Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) contribution to support the Chinese-American Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (COAA), your favored association of Chinese-American earth scientists.  COAA's CFC number is: 60027.

I would like to express my utmost appreciation to those of you who chose to become a member of COAA and supported us with CFC contributions in the past.  I would also like to encourage those of you who haven't yet joined us to become a life member of COAA.  The lifetime membership fee is a mere one hundred dollars ($100).  I personally believe that it is hard to find better value than this these days; you will see why as you read on.

COAA's missions are:
    To network ocean and atmosphere professionals in establishing a forum based on common interests;
    To facilitate professional contacts;
    And to improve qualification and occupational opportunities.

As you know, it is getting increasingly difficult to engage in effective research without working with your colleagues.  Moreover, young scientists starting up need someone to mentor.  Conversely, established scientists need trustworthy and hardworking young bloods. COAA provides a platform to facilitate these interactions, and many have led to fruitful results.

Some of the professional activities sponsored by COAA in the past year include Spring Workshop at the University of Maryland, WOCO2007 Conference at Qingdao, China. We also enter a new sister relationship with Hong Kong Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing organization. In addition to professional activities, members often find special occasions, such as Lunar New Year to dine together enjoying fellowship. It is a wonderful forum to make new friends that may also prove beneficial professionally.

CFC Contributions to COAA has been carefully and wisely used to facilitate these meaningful activities. I hope I have successfully convinced you for your CFC contribution to pave  the way for COAA's future.  And once again invite you to be a life member of this wonderful organization.  On behalf of COAA, thank you in advance.

Sincerely yours,

Quanan Zheng, Ph.D.
2007 COAA President

  • Prof. Da-Lin Zhang elected as an AMS fellow

Congratulations to Prof. Da-Lin Zhang of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, University of Maryland. He has recently been elected a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, an honor accorded to only 0.2% of the membership per year. It is given to an individual for recognition of outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, or their applications, during a substantial period of years. A formal announcement will be made during the AMS' 2006 annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. The AMS recognized Prof. Zhang's substantial achievements in the numerical modeling of mesoscale processes and severe storms. In 1991, he received the AMS' prestigious C.L. Meisinger Award "for pioneering work in the understanding and numerical modeling of mesoscale convective weather systems."

  • Dr. Benjamin F. Chao of NASA bestowed an Einstein2005 Professorship and an Honorary Professorship by the Chinese Academy of Sciencess
